Singapore – July 11, 2025 – The women’s water polo competition at the World Aquatics Championships commenced today in Singapore.
In the final match of the day, Hungary secured a 10-9 victory over World Cup champions Greece in a Group C encounter. Hungary established a lead in the third period and maintained it through a Greek fourth-quarter rally. Boglarka Neszmely, Hungary’s goalkeeper, recorded 13 saves. For Greece, 20 year old, Foteini Tricha scored six goals.
In other Group C action, Japan defeated Croatia 25-12.
Group A saw Australia record a 34-2 win against host nation Singapore. Olympic silver medalists Australia opened their campaign with a strong offensive performance. In another Group A match, Italy came from behind to defeat New Zealand 14-9.
In Group B, the Netherlands defeated Argentina 25-6. The United States also secured a win, defeating China 15-7.
Group D featured Spain’s 23-4 victory over South Africa.
In their opening match of the World Aquatics Championships, Great Britain’s women’s water polo team secured a 12-9 victory over France in a Group D fixture.
The Great Britain team, captained by Kathy Rogers, entered the tournament aiming to build on their performance in 2024, which saw them return to the global competition stage after over a decade and finish 11th overall in Doha. Prior to the championships, the senior women’s team held a training camp in Athens, before playing a friendly match in Paris against France, winning 11-12.
A good opening win for Great Britain as they focus on continuing their progress on the world stage. Head Coach Theo Nousios had stated the team’s goal was “to learn, grow, and represent Great Britain with pride.”
Great Britain’s next matches in Group D will be against South Africa on Sunday, July 13th, and then Spain on Tuesday, July 15th.
