History

The West Cup is the oldest competitive club water polo cup in the World.

First played for in 1886, it was known as the ‘ASCD Aquatics Football Challenge Cup’ and was won by West of Scotland SC using the Scottish Rules, developed by the inventor of water polo, William Wilson in Glasgow. The Scottish Rules were adopted throughout the world and remain the basis of the modern game.

The FINA learning platform in the History of Water Polo – The beginning credit Scotland as holding the World’s first National Championship in 1886, and the article is probably referring to the West Cup.
